What we collect
Submissions: the incident details you provide, any evidence links or uploaded files, and — only if you choose to give it — your email address.
Reporter applications: name, email, portfolio URL, languages and motivation. Newsletter: your email address and language preference, stored only after you confirm through the double-opt-in email.
Sponsorship enquiries: the company's details and the contact address of the person who writes to us. The public site requires no account and collects no profile data.
How we use it
Email addresses are used solely to verify submissions, respond to applications, deliver newsletters you asked for, and send one-time login codes to editorial staff and to sponsor accounts. Verification links and codes expire automatically.
We never sell or share personal data with third parties. Sponsors receive no data about you — no name, no address, no identifier — because none is collected against a sponsored slot in the first place.
Cookies
cf-theme stores your light/dark theme choice for one year. It identifies nothing and tracks nothing.
Editorial staff signing in to the portal, and sponsors signing in to theirs, hold an authentication token in their own browser. No other cookies are set, there are no third-party cookies, and no cookie is set for advertising.
Retention
Submissions and their evidence stay in the review queue until processed and are kept as part of the editorial record; rejected material may be deleted. Newsletter addresses are removed on unsubscription. You may request deletion of your personal data at any time.
Sponsorship, and what it does not do
An earlier version of this policy said the site carried no advertising at all. Sponsorship has since been introduced, and the promise is rewritten here rather than quietly dropped: we sell sponsorships directly and serve them ourselves, we do not track you, and we share no data with sponsors.
There is no ad network, no exchange, and no third-party ad tag, pixel, iframe or script anywhere on this site. A sponsored unit is an image or a block of text that we host, checked by a person before it runs.
What is counted is counted in aggregate: impressions, viewable impressions and clicks, each recorded as a daily total against the sponsored slot, the date, the section and the language. There is no per-person, per-session or per-device row in that data — no cookie identifier, no IP address, no fingerprint. This is structural rather than a policy that could be quietly relaxed: there is nowhere in the system to put such a record. It is also why we do not limit how often you see the same unit, which would require giving you an identifier.
Sponsored units carry one of exactly two labels — Advertisement for display units, Paid Post for native ones — shown above the unit and repeated on the page the click leads to. The permanent incident dossiers carry no sponsorship at all.
Political and issue advertising is not accepted, in any form and from any advertiser. Every campaign that has ever run is published, with the sponsor's registered legal name, in the transparency archive at /advertising/transparency.
